Applying for provisional GMC registration
Provisional GMC registration is for doctors without an acceptable internship. It lets you work only as a Foundation Year 1 (F1) doctor in an approved post. You typically have three years to convert to full registration after 12 months of approved F1 experience with supervisor sign-off.
Who this applies to
- Doctors whose internship isn't acceptable to the GMC.
- Doctors who never completed a post-graduation internship.
Key requirements
| What it permits | Approved F1 post only |
|---|---|
| Conversion | 12 months approved F1 + sign-off → full |
| Window | Typically must convert within three years |
Steps
1. Secure an approved F1 offer
Provisional is only useful if you have an approved F1 post arranged.
2. Apply on GMC Online
Submit the provisional application; documents mirror the full application.
3. Complete F1 and convert
After 12 months of approved F1, apply to convert to full registration.
Common failure points
