Is PLAB the right route to UK GMC registration?
PLAB is the default route to UK GMC registration for most international medical graduates. You can skip PLAB only if you hold a GMC-recognised postgraduate qualification, are eligible for a sponsored specialty route (MRCP, MRCS, MRCPCH etc.), or qualify under a limited number of relevant European qualifications. If none of those apply, you take PLAB.

Steps
1. Check GMC recognition of your postgraduate qualification
Compare your qualification against the GMC's current list. If it isn't listed, PLAB is required.
2. Check specialty sponsorship eligibility
Some specialties admit non-PLAB routes via a Royal College sponsor. Availability is limited and specialty-specific.
3. Default to PLAB if in doubt
PLAB is available in more countries, has more sitting dates, and is the accepted evidence for the widest range of NHS roles.
Common failure points
- Assuming a postgraduate qualification exempts you when it isn't on the GMC's list.
- Waiting for sponsored-route availability while an English evidence certificate expires.
